What to expect with hounds among dog breeds

The classification of hounds includes some of the oldest known dog breeds and includes beloved beagles. The hunting dogs can be smell-hunting dogs (dogs hunting with smell) or vision-hunting dogs (dogs hunting with vision). Dachshunds began to chase pests. Because of this feature, they can be said to belong to terriers, but this name (and other factors) shows that this is not the case.

From a miniature dachshund about 5 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing less than 10 pounds to the tallest dog in Ireland, it is more than 30 inches tall and weighs more than 100 pounds. Hounds come in various sizes:

  • Tiny breeds(less than 20 pounds): Dachshunds, standard and miniature.
  • Small- to medium-sized breeds(20 to 50 pounds): Basenji, Basset Hound, Beagle, Harrier, Norwegian Elkhound, Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Whippet.
  • Large breeds(50 to 80 pounds): Afghan Hound, American Foxhound, Black and Tan Coonhound, English Foxhound, Greyhound, Ibizan Hound, Pharaoh Hound, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Saluki.
  • Giant breeds(more than 80 pounds): Blood-hound, Borzoi, Irish Wolfhound, Otterhound, Scottish Deerhound.

Most hounds have the energy to burn, but most hounds are quite calm in the house. Greyhounds, for example, are often referred to as “couch potatoes at 40 miles an hour” because they decide they prefer to nap. Odorous hounds tend to be more active than visible hounds.

There are some potential good pets in this group. The most famous is the beagle, a happy and strong dog, which is considered to be an excellent companion for children. The Bassett Hound is also highly recommended.

Coats are usually low maintenance: most, but not all, of these varieties are short hair or wire hair. The most obvious exception is the Afghan Hound, whose long silky coat quickly tangled without constant attention.

TIP: Do not expect hounds to see every step of your way out: they have better things to do, follow their noses and eyes according to their traditional requirements. “Come on” may be a difficult concept for many hounds. Indoor training can be difficult for scent hounds.
